Release the Blacken!

Release the Blacken! was created by Scott of Hopping Scotts for our collaborative brew day. It’s a Cascadian Dark Ale or Black IPA or IBA if you prefer. The recipe is heavily hopped with half a pound of Columbus, Cascade and Palisade hops.

This beer is still getting to its final carbonation level in the keg, but I fear we might drain half the keg before it gets there. In all honesty, I’m not completely sold on Black IPA’s. I think it’s a very difficult style to get right, as the wrong amount of roast and malt quickly changes the beer to a hoppy stout instead of a “Black IPA”. I haven’t had tons of examples, but the “Back in Black” from 21st Amendment and the Diesel from Sixpoint are two very different but very good samples I’ve had. Sixpoint refuses to pidgeonhole their beers into styles, but the Diesel is definitely a hoppy stout if it isn’t a Black IPA.

This brew is probably a tad too roasty and malty, though it’s very close to being right. The hop profile and flavor is satisfying for my hop-head wife Gretchen which is great since she generally hates anything darker then an amber ale. I’m not sure this will make it into regular rotation in our future kegerator, but it’s a worthy experiment to have in the archives.

Note that due to some deficiencies in BeerAlchemy, many elements of the recipe’s BeerXML file simply do not export or are not supported. The fine details of the recipe are as follows:
